The Museum :: Activities
Maintaining an open channel of communication with the public is a central reference point for the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa which attempts to broaden the base of visitors while encouraging their active participation, as well as to increase their flow throughout the year. Now that the museum has established the infrastructure which enables it to offer improved facilities and services and apart from the operation of the permanent exhibition, its priority remain the communicative, educational and recreational character of the museum as well as its organic integration in the cultural life of the area. At the same time, the basic aim is the establishment of collaborations with local administration agencies, scientific, cultural and educational organisations, as well as with social solidarity institutions.
In this context, the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa has included in its initial planning the implementation and hosting of parallel cultural activities, in order to become a place for the expression of alternative education forms and a culture production center: Temporary exhibitions with various themes, artistic/cultural events (music concerts, film and documentary screenings, book reviews), informative meetings, lectures, seminars, etc. are organized by the Museum or in cooperation with other agencies and hosted on-site.
Particular attention is given to the implementation of targeted educational activities addressing to younger visitors. The permanent educational programmes and the thematic training activities designed either in conjunction with corresponding temporary exhibitions or in the framework of established cultural events help children become familiar with cultural heritage; moreover, as a source of joy and creativity, they encourage participation and develop the children’s ability for observation, research, combinatorial thinking and understanding. Combining theory with practice, they offer a multifaceted approach to knowledge, thus converting the museum for / by the young visitors into a vibrant place of interaction and personal experience.
